The amount of information you receive when pregnant can be overwhelming!  While growing that little human, it is important to take certain precautions, see the right specialists, and be prepared for what’s to come.  All three of my pregnancies have been unique.  I could spend hours boring you with the ins and outs of each of them…but I will spare you.  Instead, I will share with you an important and exciting resource that will help you through your pregnancy journey.

I had the privilege of interviewing the inspiring Jillian Michaels (celebrity fitness trainer, author, and television personality) on her new book, Yeah BABY, found here, which was released on November 15th!  You may know Jillian as the bad ass fitness trainer you’ve seen on The Biggest Loser, but in her new book, you’ll see a different side of Jillian.  Working with an expert dream team, including an OB-GYN, pregnancy fitness specialist, Endocrinologist, registered dietitian, and pediatrician, she wrote this all-inclusive pregnancy and post-pregnancy guide that will knock your socks off.

Speaking with Jillian confirmed to me her passion on the subject of pregnancy health.  We covered subjects that are cutting edge on the pregnancy health scene.  Here are a few of my favorite pieces of advice from our conversation:

  • Take at least 6 months to prepare your body before trying to conceive.  Jillian made a great point…no one is telling you the importance of preparing your body to carry a baby.  It is important to get a doctor check –up, see an Endocrinologist, and be healthy mentally and physically for what’s to come.
  • If something doesn’t feel right, get multiple opinions.  Just because your doctor/midwife/doula says something, doesn’t make it scripture.  Make sure you go with your gut and get multiple opinions.  And don’t be afraid to change doctors it is not a fit.
  • Managing weight during pregnancy is far easier (and more healthy) than trying to start after baby is born. Following a healthy meal and exercise plan, as completely outlined in Yeah BABY!, is the key to not only a healthy baby, but also a healthy you after birth.  I love that Jillian has provided great recipes and safe exercises in her book that make it so much easier to stay on course.  And yes, you can continue with that Zumba or Kickboxing class…just be sure to modify.
  • “I am woman, hear me roar!” is dangerous.  Even if you want to and feel like you can do everything as a mom, it is unhealthy for you and your child to do so.  It takes a village and it is important to take a time-out for yourself and for your baby!  Jillian suggests 8-12 hours of “me” time per week.  Even if you feel like that is not possible, start somewhere.  It will make a huge difference.
  • Create a healthy lifestyle example that your children will want to follow.  Our children get it.  They watch us.  They mimic us.  Be a healthy example for them and teach them why it is important to be healthy.

I was beyond impressed with Jillian’s knowledge on all things pregnancy!  She knows what she’s talking about and her book, Yeah BABY! covers EVERYTHING you need to know (yes, even hemorrhoids, the glucose test, vaccinations, and post-partum depression).  She outlines questions for each doctors visit and prepares you for many different birthing scenarios.  I can’t say enough good about this book.  If you are preparing to conceive or are already pregnant, run and get Yeah BABY! NOW!  And thanks, Jillian, for working hard to put out a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for us mommas.  xoxo

And after that stressful yet exciting time of a pregnancy (or three) you end up with something like this 🙂
